Motivational Research Proposal: Using the ARCS Model of Motivational Design to Enhance Student Engagement in the Sixth-Grade Earth and Space Science Unit "The Earth and Society"

- Purpose and Nature of the Artifact: This artifact consists of a comprehensive research proposal and an accompanying 23-minute video presentation titled "Motivational Research Proposal: Using the ARCS Model of Motivational Design to Enhance Student Engagement in the Sixth-Grade Earth and Space Science Unit 'The Earth and Society'". Developed for EME 6419: Motivational Design in Summer 2025 under the direction of Dr. Sanghoon Park, the project addresses a critical pedagogical problem: middle school student disengagement when encountering abstract, complex scientific concepts (such as climate systems, sustainability, and human-environment interactions) within a fixed district curriculum map. The primary purpose of this artifact is to apply an established motivational design methodology to convert a passive, lecture-heavy science unit into an active, student-centered, and hybrid learning environment.
- Description of the Design Development Process:
The design process followed John Keller’s 10-step Motivational Design Process. It began with collecting course and learner data for 11–12-year-old students in Pasco County Schools. I then conducted an audience analysis to assess attention readiness, perceived relevance, confidence, and satisfaction. Next, I completed an ARCS analysis of existing classroom materials to identify motivational gaps, including repetitive pacing and limited student autonomy. Based on these findings, I developed five motivational objectives with aligned qualitative and quantitative measures. I then created a matrix of motivational strategies and embedded them into a six- to seven-day blended learning plan. The plan combined teacher-led instruction with curated digital resources, including OpenSciEd, Khan Academy, PBS LearningMedia, and simulations, delivered through the district’s Canvas learning management system (myLearning).

Explanation of How the Artifact Demonstrates the Sub-Standards:
- S.5.1 Theoretical Foundations: The proposal demonstrates a strong understanding of how educational theory informs instructional practice. It is grounded in Keller’s ARCS Model of Motivational Design (Keller, 1987), which includes Attention, Relevance, Confidence, and Satisfaction. The literature integrates research showing that real-world contexts improve relevance (Bulunuz & Jarrett, 2010), scaffolded inquiry supports attention (Bodzin & Cates, 2002), and project-based learning enhances satisfaction and learner agency (Krajcik & Shin, 2014). It also connects to Alderfer’s ERG Theory by showing how collaborative learning supports relatedness and esteem needs.
- S.5.2 Method: The project uses an instructional design and research-based approach guided by Keller’s 10-step motivational design process. Strategies were aligned with adolescent learners’ needs. Attention was supported through real-world examples such as weather events and satellite imagery. Relevance was built through Florida-based topics like recycling and hurricane preparedness. Confidence was supported with “I Can” statements, graphic organizers, and group roles. Satisfaction was addressed through a final project where students propose solutions for reducing local plastic waste using digital tools such as Canva or slides.
- S.5.3 Assessing and Evaluating: The artifact uses a mixed-methods evaluation approach combining summative assessments aligned with Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and formative digital tools. A Course Interest Survey (CIS) is administered at the beginning and midpoint using Google Forms to measure changes in engagement and confidence. Additional tools include Kahoot for prior knowledge checks, Poll Everywhere for engagement feedback, Edpuzzle for video interaction data, and Padlet for reflections.
- S.5.4 Ethics: Ethical standards and district requirements are embedded throughout the design. The proposal follows pacing guides, curriculum safety rules, and science standards. It supports diverse learners through multiple formats, including visual, audio, and hands-on activities. Digital equity and privacy are ensured by using only district-approved tools within the Canvas environment.

Competencies and Skills Gained: Through this inquiry, I mastered the application of John Keller’s 10-step motivational design process within a K-12 setting. I gained advanced skills in conducting targeted audience behavioral analyses, translating macro-level motivational theories into granular classroom tactics, building balanced hybrid lesson plans, and synthesizing qualitative feedback from digital tools (such as Edpuzzle, Padlet, and specialized Course Interest Surveys) to drive continuous, iterative data-informed instructional revisions.

Role and Specific Contributions: My role was Principal Researcher, Instructional Designer, and Presenter for this individual project. I conducted the full literature review and authored the complete 10-step motivational design narrative. I aligned the curriculum with Florida’s Next Generation Sunshine State Standards and developed the Kahoot assessment questions. I also designed the infographic layout for the Course Interest Survey in the appendix and recorded and produced the audiovisual presentation summarizing the implementation framework.

A comparative analysis matrix was used to examine research questions, methodologies, and theoretical frameworks. A structured presentation script was then developed to organize the narrative flow, followed by the creation of a media rich slide deck incorporating visual models such as Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) and engagement frameworks. The final stage synthesized the findings into actionable implications for instructional design and research in distance education.

I was solely responsible for all phases of the work, including selecting and analyzing the literature, conducting the comparative research analysis, writing the full narrative in the narration script document, designing the visual materials in the presentation slide deck, and evaluating the institutional and ethical implications of the research.

Competencies and Skills Gained: Through this project, I strengthened my skills in mixed methods research design, quantitative survey development, and qualitative semi structured interview protocols. I also improved my ability to apply major theoretical frameworks such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to technology enhanced educational contexts. In addition, I developed stronger skills in academic writing, research collaboration, and ethical evaluation in institutional research settings.

Role and Specific Contributions: This was a group project developed for EDF 6481 Foundations of Educational Research Course. I served as a primary investigator and contributing researcher within the team. My responsibilities included writing key sections of the literature review focused on teacher perceptions and AI adoption, designing the mixed methods integration framework, developing data analysis procedures for both quantitative and qualitative components, and contributing to the ethical framework addressing data security, privacy, and algorithmic bias.
